At DEFEND Abogados, we believe that the law and the compliance with it is the basis and sustenance for the well-being and prosperity of each and every Mexican; especially, in fiscal matters and that far from being seen as an affront, taxes should be seen as a tool to promote the development and sustenance for the country.
Recently, the new government has made a special emphasis with tax evasion and the great repercussions that this causes in the Mexican economy.
Many analysts and experts claim that this is not a regular problem. For instance, the current Secretary of the Treasury Carlos Urzúa Macias assures that, according to official figures, 3 to 4 points of the Gross Domestic Product (or GDP) are the exclusive result of tax avoidance; in other words, around 1 trillion pesos are the result of people evading taxes.
Given the above, strategies are currently being sought to help put an end to this problem, and one of these strategies is to apply the law diligently against anyone who commits this crime, either by companies / ghost operations or through "businesses" with other companies (known as the famous "outsourcing"). In legal terms, that means that anyone who manages their finances or businesses outside the law is subject to the consequences, without any type of exception in spite of their profession or economic position.
With this tough strategy, the new government hopes to dramatically reduce the practice of tax evasion and promote a culture of cooperation with the government and the treasury.
We are interested in knowing your opinion: what is your position on this strategy? What actions do you think should be taken to combat tax evasion?
