Over the past few years, Mexico has passed through a lot very possitive changes, specifically, in the matter of how Parents are treated by the law and society.
In popular Mexican culture, people are conditioned to see Mothers as the ones who take care of the children every day of the week, while Fathers are seen as the ones who provide food to the table... and sometimes see the children. In other words, popular traditions usually deals with duties as a matter of absolutes (Matriarchy or "Machismo"), and it is believed that only Mothers should always be responsible for the care of children
Nevertheless, the law is clear, and we know that is simply not true.
According to the Mexican "Supreme Court of Justice" (SCJN, by its initials in spanish), "Gender equity constitutes a human right that assists both men and women": In other words, Males have practically the same rights and obligations as Females according to law. And also, when Males become parents, there still isn´t an apparent distinction, since the SCJN also declare that "Both progenitors are equally capable for the care of the children".
And following this legal statement, the Supreme Court has decided to issue a set of criteria that break traditional concepts in matters of Guardianship, Custody, Education and Coexistence with children under 12 years of age.
This is a major breakthrough for the Mexican people. The creation of laws that also protect Male parents has made the general population gain awareness of the subject: Fathers now are more protected by the society, Mothers are now demanding the fulfillment of the law, and above all, the foundations of what makes every Mexican family are stronger tha ever.
