Last Thursday, February 21 of 2019 at the XI Ordinary Session, the Government of Cancun (through the City Council) approved the initiative that prohibits the use of plastic and unicel packaging’s in commercial, industrial and service establishments in the municipality of Benito Juarez, Quintana Roo. As a direct result, many articles in the Regulation for the Prevention and Integral Management of Solid Waste (in addition to the Regulation of Ecology and Environmental Management of Benito Juarez) are planned to be modified. All of this happened in order to promote the use of reusable and recyclable items; among the products to be eliminated are plastic bags, straws, packaging or plastic, unicel or polyethylene containers.
Luis Pablo Bustamante Beltrán, councilor and the one who presented this proposal, affirms that in the event that any organization breaks this new regulations, the Integral Solution for Solid Waste (SIRESOL, for its acronym in spanish) will impose fines ranging from 60 thousand to 1 million 600 thousand pesos. In addition, some cases will even face closures (temporary, definitive, partial or total) or house arrest for up to 36 hours. These new reforms will start with a certain degree of flexibility, since businesses, organizations and companies will have 90 days to make the transition from these materials to recyclable materials.
